Three Marian University students—Alecia Kissel, Paige Prather, and Tyler Stinn—are finalists for Intern of the Year award from Indiana INTERNet, an intern-matching program aimed at expanding the creation and use of experiential learning opportunities as a key strategy in retaining Indiana’s top talent.

Kissel, a senior majoring in communication, interned with Milliner & Associates last summer. Prather ’14, a December graduate who majored in management, interned with Angie’s List. Stinn, a senior majoring in accounting and finance, interned at Somerset CPAs.

“It is a point of pride for Marian University to have three students nominated for this honor by their respective employers,” said Ellen Whitt, executive director of The Exchange. “They have each demonstrated their unique leadership abilities in the workplace, have gained experience that matters, and have paved the way for future students to share in these important opportunities.”

Kissel’s internship not only helped her gain important workplace experience, but it also exposed her to different career paths.

“Internships are a good place to figure out if that work or field is what you want to pursue as a career. I love working at a boutique staffing firm, but I have also learned about event planning and employee relations at my internship,” Kissel said. “Those are other paths I want to explore in my future and I would not have known that without my internship.”

Prather and Stinn’s internships have turned into full-time employment. When Stinn graduates, he will be working at Somerset CPAs full time. After graduating in December, Prather became a talent acquisition specialist at Angie’s List.

“I knew that there would be many students graduating around the same time as me with a bachelor’s degree in management,” Prather said. “With this in mind, having an internship is a clear way to set yourself apart from students who do not take the initiative to participate in internships.”

The three students will attend the ninth annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon on February 4, where the Intern of the Year will be announced. The IMPACT Awards Luncheon is a program that shines light on the importance of internships and applauds the individuals who make these experiences meaningful and successful.
