Senior Camp Counselor at Dunes Learning Center

Dunes Learning Center (DLC) is a residential education facility within the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore that works in close partnership with the National Park Service (NPS). Senior Camp Counselors are members of the program staff at the DLC. They supervise summer camp residents while developing their outdoor education and resource interpretation skills and techniques. Senior Camp Counselors are an integral part of the program, taking on leadership roles as mentors, educators and trainers.

Specific duties include assist with staff training, overnight supervision of campers in cabins, leading evening activities (campfires, group games, etc.), hosting a tent camp out with campers, leading meal and flag raising activities. Senior Camp Counselors also have the opportunity for professional development by shadowing NPS staff and Dunes Learning Center Naturalists.

Term of Position: Full-time, 8 week position June 10, 2016 – August 5, 2016 (2 weeks of training – 6 weeks of camp). Involves evening hours and special weekend events.

Benefits: $300.00 per week stipend, housing in cabins shared with summer camp residents on the campus of DLC, uniforms, First Aid/CPR training, meals when groups are in residence, and professional development opportunities.

Responsibilities

Attend training workshops and regularly scheduled staff meetings
Assist Education Director and Lead Naturalist in training of Camp Counselors
Serve as a peer-mentor for Summer Camp Counselors, observing, consulting, and supporting them on a regular basis
Facilitate communication between Summer Camp Counselors to ensure set-up and clean-up responsibilities are met and program materials and equipment are maintained
Maintain a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA)
Supervise and be responsible for up to 8 children overnight in cabins on DLC campus
Lead evening activities and other portions of DLC summer camp programs
Conduct research and make preparations needed for all assigned educational programs
Assist in the day-to-day maintenance of program equipment, exhibits, and facilities
Comply with all DLC employment policies as outlined in the Dunes Learning Center Employee Handbook
Perform all assigned duties critical to the operation of the Dunes Learning Center

Qualifications

Must have served as a Summer Camp Counselor at Dunes Learning Center in 2015
Must be at least 18 years of age
Physically able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and hike several miles over hilly dunes
Enthusiastic about working with children in an outdoor setting
Great independent worker and team player with a positive mental attitude
Currently enrolled in an Associate or BA/BS academic program

All Dunes Learning Center employees must submit to a background check and possible drug screening.
