This internship will take place in an active, play-based, early childhood and kindergarten classroom enrolled with 21 children ages 3-6. Harmony School is k-12 school located two blocks from Indiana University. Quite a bit of this internship will take place in our outdoor spaces as well, such as the playground and wooded areas the school’s campus. Interns will have up to 20 hours a week with a set weekly schedule that will be organized to accommodate their class schedule and homework load. Interns will attend our training session as well as parent orientation.
There are always two lead teachers working alongside our interns, allowing for on the job training and modeling of teaching techniques. Interns will be interacting with the children and helping facilitate the development of early literacy and math skills as well as nurturing a love of learning and exploration. This internship is ideal for anyone entering or studying a field that requires skills for working with children, such as teaching of any kind, outdoor recreation, pediatrics, child psychology etc.
Interns will have duties related to all aspects of an Early Childhood Program, including but not limited to, preparing classroom material, setting up activities for the children, preparing, cleaning and organizing the enviroment, and communicating with parents.
We will train and help the interns become familiar with our philosophy about playbased early childhood education.
Responsibilities
The majority of this internship will consist of working directly with children. Interns will have duties related to all aspects of an Early Childhood Program, including but not limited to, preparing classroom material, setting up activities for the children, preparing, cleaning, and organizing the classroom enviroment, communicating with parents and preparing snacks. Interns will also be responsible for maintaining good attendentce and finding subs when needed.
Qualifications
Interns should have work time available during the hours of 7:30am-6pm Monday through Friday. They should enjoy the company of young children and be willing to participate in a hands on active environment. An openess to learning about playbased education and earlychildhood development is required.
