Description

The Hazard Assessment Team (HAT) will be in the field identifying and mitigating hazards. The majority of work will come from mid-July, as setup for the Indiana State Fair begins, through the complete run of the Fair. Fair activities change each day resulting in new and emerging hazards that require identification and mitigation by HAT interns. Interns will learn to think quickly and creatively to recognize hazards and implement solutions. Interns will also learn to function tactically in response to emergency situations as they arise on the property. This position is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students with a desire for a career in firefighting, code enforcement, OSHA and workplace safety, and special event operations.

Responsibilities

  1. Perform daily hazard assessments around the Fairgrounds to assess the risk of various event setups and behaviors of guests and employees and suggest solutions to help mitigate risk.
  2. Coordinate safety and security needs (particularly mitigation tasks) for different events and projects on the Fairgrounds.
  3. Assist with on-scene response efforts coordinating traffic and crowd movement.
  4. Identify and mitigate employee hazards in regards to OSHA regulations and Fairgrounds processes.
  5. Interact with guests and other personnel daily and provide a high level of customer service during complex situations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Background or education in law enforcement or public safety preferred.
  • Knowledge of NPFA and OSHA guidelines preferred.
