Indiana INTERNnet, the state’s leading work-based learning matching marketplace, was established in 2001. It was designed to connect Hoosier college students and employers at a time when many postsecondary graduates were leaving Indiana to start their careers. The goal? Stem the “brain drain” as more college students learned about and completed internships with Hoosier companies.
Fast forward 20 years. Over 11,000 students have secured internships via IndianaINTERN.net. But the robust economy that grew for more than a decade – before COVID-19 pushed the pause button – revealed that keeping college graduates in Indiana wasn’t enough for employers’ insatiable demand for talent. Some are looking for students in earlier stages of their education to take on internships.

There is much more to the updated IndianaINTERN.net (IIN) than meets the eye! Along with a fresh new look, we’ve added multiple features to the site to enhance the experience for students, employers and educators. These additions make it easier for students and employers to connect.

This new feature allows employers to conveniently message students without ever leaving the site. IIN’s in-site messaging also makes it easy for employers to recruit applicants. Registered employers can search for interns by keyword, school, major, location and more. After finding students who fulfill the internship’s needs, employers can send those students a message inviting them to apply.
For example, an employer with a marketing internship in Indianapolis could search for students on the web site who are marketing majors and live in Marion County. Then, they’re able to view the students’ profiles and resumes, and send more information …
Indiana INTERNnet (IIN) and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) are continuing to advocate the importance of internships through the Employment Aid Readiness Network (EARN) Indiana program.
EARN Indiana is a mutually-beneficial program for employers and students. Eligible students benefit from a wide variety of positions offering competitive pay and valuable experience. These internships can be used to explore career interests, develop transferable skills, apply academic coursework to the professional world, examine career interests and earn college credit.
Employers with an approved internship can be reimbursed for up to 50% of an eligible intern’s wages. Interns can bring a fresh take to the organization and assist with backburner projects. There is also the opportunity for talent acquisition (promoting to full-time positions) and recruitment of other students.

In 2013, Indiana INTERNnet (IIN) began partnering with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) to facilitate its Employment Aid Readiness Network (EARN) Indiana program. EARN Indiana reimburses employers with an approved internship up to 50 percent of each eligible intern’s wage.

Ryan Palmore graduated from IUPUI in August with a BA in philosophy. After completing a summer internship with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE), he was hired by the organization as a Student Support Specialist. After several months, he was promoted to Assistant Director – Student Support Services.

That’s right! Many students have begun searching for summer opportunities, and some employers have hired their summer interns already. Like holiday music in the mall, the process seems to start earlier each year.

Be thorough when describing the expectations and duties so you attract the right type of candidates for the position. Create an intern work plan and offer students as much real-world experience as possible. Remember, you are grooming the future workforce.
